Tesla recently released an update for the 2024 Tesla Model 3, and although the changes may seem minor at first glance, there’s actually quite a lot that’s been improved. The entry-level Tesla Model 3 now starts at just under $62,000, a price increase of almost $5,000. Despite this, it still offers excellent value for money considering its features and capabilities. In terms of competition, alternatives like the BYD Seal and the Polestar 2 are out there, but the latter has become quite pricey. Therefore, the BYD Seal stands as the most logical competitor. 2024 Tesla Model 3 Exterior design

Starting with colours, the 2024 Tesla Model 3 comes with optional colours that are quite pricey, ranging from $1,500 to $2,600. Moving on to the front, there’s a noticeable change in the headlights with a thin strip now integrated, and the fog lights have been incorporated within the headlight cluster to enhance aerodynamics and range. However, the Matrix LED functionality appears to be software-driven and not yet active. Additionally, front and rear parking sensors are absent, relying solely on camera-based systems, which might need some testing to evaluate their effectiveness.

Moving to the side, a new wheel design for the entry-level variant is covered for aerodynamic efficiency. Michelin tyres have been improved for reduced rolling resistance and noise absorption. Underneath, the structure has been made more rigid, allowing for the installation of frequency-selective dampers, promising better ride quality.

The door handles remain unchanged, but there’s a noticeable improvement in the door slam sound, now reminiscent of European luxury cars. Acoustic glass has been extended throughout the vehicle for improved sound insulation.

At the back, LED tail lights are integrated into the boot, contributing to aerodynamic efficiency. The overall design changes aim to enhance the Model 3’s efficiency and aesthetics.

Moving inside, there have been some changes worth noting. Firstly, the authentication location for starting and unlocking the vehicle has been moved to the outside glass panel. You’ll now need to place your key there to start or move the vehicle.

Now, let’s dive into the cabin changes. LED lights along the interior add a touch of ambience, with customizable colour options. The door cards now feature a fabric material instead of wood or white trim, providing a more premium feel. The glove box has a new magnetic closure mechanism, offering a different sound when closing.

The screen remains familiar but is slightly larger, with reduced bezels, taking up more space at 15.4 inches instead of 15. Design changes are also noticeable in the lower dashboard area. Storage options are still ample throughout the cabin, albeit with slight material differences.

Regarding touchpoints, surfaces are soft and comfortable, contributing to an enjoyable driving experience. In terms of build quality, the overall feel is solid, with minimal issues observed, such as a slight alignment discrepancy at the top. The door slam sound has improved, now sounding more premium and solid.

Infotainment

The infotainment system is a cornerstone of the interior, with capacitive touch buttons allowing for easy activation and deactivation. High beam controls and a button for activating the camera while driving are conveniently located on the steering wheel. The steering wheel also houses functions previously handled by stalks, such as indicators and wipers, and provides access to voice controls, although these features may need improvement.

The central screen offers various functionalities, including maps with satellite overlays and charging station locations. Tesla’s in-built Spotify, Apple Music, and Apple Podcasts integration provide entertainment options, although premium features may require a subscription. Zoom functionality allows for joining meetings using the car’s internal camera, and radio options include FM and digital radio. The stereo system has been downgraded to a nine-speaker setup, but features like dash cam recording, Sentry mode, and entertainment options like arcade games and streaming services are available.

Additionally, the 2024 Tesla Model 3 offers unique features such as a built-in megaphone, customizable horn sounds, and child lock controls for added convenience and safety. However, using some functions while driving may be distracting, suggesting room for improvement in usability.

However, the full self-driving package, priced at $5,000 to $10,000, may not be worth the investment as it has been reported to be clunky and unreliable by some users. It’s advisable to exercise caution and avoid spending money on features that may not meet expectations.

In terms of practicality, the Model 3 offers connectivity options such as two 60-watt wireless phone chargers and a 12-volt outlet in the front, along with USB-C ports for additional device charging. The car provides ample storage space for personal items, ensuring convenience for daily use.

Practicality

The 2024 Tesla Model 3 offers practical features and amenities for both drivers and passengers. In terms of cupholders, various sizes of cups and bottles can be accommodated in different locations, ensuring convenience during drives. Additional storage options include a spacious centre console, ample storage space in the door pockets, and a glove box, albeit a small one.

Comfort features are abundant, with climate control settings accessible via the touchscreen, including heated and cooled seats, adjustable airflow, and customizable settings. The seats themselves are comfortable and offer plenty of adjustments for both driver and passenger, including lumbar support and electric adjustments for the steering wheel.

In the second row, however, space is somewhat limited, particularly in terms of legroom, making it less comfortable for taller passengers. Additionally, the sloping roofline can lead to discomfort and warmth for rear passengers. Nevertheless, amenities such as lights, hooks, map pockets, and cup holders are provided, along with fixed points for child seats.

Regarding the infotainment system in the second row, while it offers entertainment options, such as video playback and games, its location may not be ideal for comfortable viewing, especially for children. The placement of the screen on the centre console may require passengers to crane their necks downward, potentially causing discomfort.

Cargo space is ample, with nearly 600 litres available in the boot, along with additional storage options under the floor and in the front trunk. This, coupled with the ability to charge via AC and DC charging, makes the Model 3 a versatile and practical choice for everyday use.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

There are three different Model 3 trims available, and each has a projected driving range that varies. With a stated range of 272 miles, the standard rear-wheel-drive variant is the most economical. The anticipated range of model 3 is increased to 341 miles by upgrading to the Long Range variant. (If you use the more expensive 19-inch wheels, the expected range figures decrease.)

Charging the 2024 Tesla Model 3 is optimized for longevity and efficiency, with Tesla recommending keeping the battery at around 80% charge for regular use to prolong its lifespan. However, for longer drives, charging to 100% is suitable. AC charging is available at up to 3-phase 11 kW, while DC charging offers peak rates of 170 kW, with an average of 100 kW.
