The Volkswagen Golf R, the Golf family’s all-wheel drive hot hatch, will enter its third iteration in 2022. The Golf R, like its forefather, the GTI, aspires for exciting excitement behind the wheel paired with the practicality of a tiny hatchback car. It mostly meets those criteria, although this new edition feels a touch uninspired. This generation VW Golf R gets a more powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a torque-vectoring AWD system optimized for better handling, and some technological interior changes. These complement the interior and exterior style upgrades.

Volkswagen Golf R Exterior

On the exterior, An R-specific bumper with a splitter and side intakes that direct cooling air help the 2022 Golf R visually stand out from the Golf GTI in the front. An illuminated LED strip is atop a blue stripe that is present in the upper grille of the Golf R. The Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) on the fender and the strips that extend from the VW logo give the front of the car their recognizable appearance. In addition to the LED light strip, the road is also illuminated by regular LED headlights. The R emblem, located on the right side of the grille, designates membership in the Volkswagen R family internationally.

At the back, the R-specific bumper, eye-catching high-gloss black diffuser, and quad-tipped exhaust system are all brand-new. The R logo is located directly beneath the Volkswagen badge in the centre of the hatch. Taillight clusters with LEDs are common on both sides. For the model year 2022, the Golf R comes in three distinctive colours: Pure White, Deep Black Pearl, and Lapiz Blue Metallic.

Volkswagen Golf R Interior

The Golf R borrows the GTI’s new cabin design, which is more sporty than the previous-generation Golf. Both include a thick-rimmed steering wheel with touch-sensitive buttons that control a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster that can be customized. The Golf R doesn’t have plaid seat inserts like the GTI, but it does have bolstered front seats with Nappa leather upholstery. The side portions of these unique buckets have blue and carbon-look accents, and the backrest has a blue “R” insignia. Ambient lighting with 30 colours, stainless-steel pedals, and more carbon-look trim on the dashboard are among the other interior upgrades. The new Golf R also offers a spacious cargo area and a relaxing back seat.

Engine, power and Transmission

The Golf R is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-four that produces 315 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, up from 288 horsepower and 280 pound-feet in the previous generation R. A six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission are available to go with the engine. For superior handling, the standard 4Motion all-wheel-drive system includes a rear differential that actively distributes torque between the left and right rear wheels. By pushing the “R” button on the steering wheel, the Golf R’s various drive modes (Comfort, Sport, Race, Special, Drift, and Individual) can be engaged.

Infotainment and connectivity features

The Golf R’s infotainment system will be controlled via a 10.0-inch touchscreen in the dashboard’s centre. Touch-sensitive sliders replace physical knobs and buttons as auxiliary controls. The system should come with a Harman/Kardon quality stereo in addition to the required charging ports. Popular features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot are also expected.

How much does Golf R cost?

The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R price starts from 44,000 US dollars.
