Toyota hasn’t changed much for the most affordable sports car for 2023, the GR86. Everything that made the GT86 so thrilling to drive is carried over into the Toyota GR86, which amplifies the thrills even further. Sleek and elegant, its coupe shape combines lightweight components, including an aluminium top, with aerodynamics inspired by motorsports for class-leading handling and stability. The GR86 offers heart-pounding performance that will put a grin on your face when coupled with a new, lightweight, horizontally opposed 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine.

The Toyota GR86’s appearance is an evolution of the previous GT86; it has the same long, low hood and compact rear end. However, compared to the vehicle it replaces, the new vehicle has a 5 mm larger wheelbase and is 10 mm lower (1310 mm).

A gaping grille with a GR emblem in the top right corner and L-shaped LED headlights are seen upfront. The automobile has imposing side vents on the bumper that flow into self-assured side skirts with air breathers that sit behind the front wheels. The huge twin exhaust pipes are still present, and the sloping roofline at the back slopes into a discreet boot-mounted ducktail spoiler. The range of wheel sizes is 17 to 18 inches, with Michelin Primacy tires on the lower sizes and Michelin Sport 4 tires on the bigger sizes.

When compared to the previous model’s interior, which was inspired by a chocolate tray, both the infotainment system and the interior quality have improved. Toyota claims that the new system is substantially faster than the dated one. Additionally, it will be pre-equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay so you can use your phone’s apps for navigation and music playback while mirroring the screen on your car.

With a low-to-the-floor seat, an adjustable steering wheel, sport seats that hold you firmly in place, and a high transmission tunnel that gives you the impression that you are not sitting on the car, you have a fantastic driving position. The GR86 is still a big-booted two-seater, thus it’s preferable to fold the back seats away rather than use them for anyone with legs.

Infotainment and connectivity features

The smaller 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen will be replaced by an 8.0-inch model starting in 2023. The GR86 also features a 7.0-inch digital gauge display that can be customized with Normal, Sport, and Track settings. All models come with SiriusXM satellite radio and a free three-month trial of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, respectively. The improved Premium trim comes with an eight-speaker sound system in contrast to the base model’s six speakers.

Engine, power and transmission

The 2022 Toyota GR86 engine is the same flat-four as the old car’s, which helps keep the chassis weight low, but it has been bored out from 2.0 to 2.4 litres, increasing power from 200 PS to 231 PS. The new car’s top speed has increased from 137 to 140 mph, and it now accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 6.3 seconds rather than 7.6 seconds. The car will have quicker in-gear acceleration without needing to shift down to move forward quickly thanks to the 250Nm maximum torque, which arrives at 3700 r.p.m.

The chassis has also received upgrades. It is 50% more robust than the previous model, and lightweight aluminium is utilized for the front wings, roof, and bonnet, as was the case with the previous model. Sharp steering (just 2.5 revolutions lock-to-lock) and vented front and rear brake discs (which should help disperse heat during severe track use) are two other carryovers from the previous model. As does the limited-slip rear differential, which allows the car to slide out of corners more easily.

Safety and driver assistance features

The transmission you choose will have a significant impact on the safety features available on the new GR 86. On the bright side, all models include seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag and curtain airbags in both rows. A rear-view camera, hill start aid, tire pressure monitoring, vehicle stability control, traction control, and Smart Stop Technology are also standard on the 86. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on the Premium.

The automated models have various driver-assist systems that are becoming increasingly important, regardless of class. These include adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, pre-collision throttle management, lane departure warning, sway warning, lead vehicle start alert, and high beam assist. The Premium with automatic transmission includes a parking sonar system and reverse automated braking.

2023 Toyota GR86 Price

With a manual transmission, the 2022 Toyota GR86 starts at $27,700, and with an automatic, it costs $29,200. The GR86 manual starts at $30,300 in Premium trim, while the GR86 automatic starts at $31,800.
