Mercedes-iconic Benz’s G-Wagen SUV has military roots. The high-performance Mercedes-AMG G63 model from 2022 serves an entirely different driver than the original model from the 1970s, though. Amazing performance is provided by a 577-hp twin-turbocharged V-8 engine, and the luxurious interior features all of the contemporary conveniences we’ve come to expect from a top-tier Mercedes.
The original truck’s designers would have considered it science fiction to include the plethora of entertainment and other digital elements that are now considered commonplace. Do you desire to travel off-road? The G63 is capable of handling similar tasks, but we wouldn’t recommend robbing it of its sporty-appearing 20-inch wheels.
Mercedes-Benz G63 Interior
When compared to the previous G-class, the interior will feel comfortable, but the cabin is now entirely modern. It has high-quality materials, a 12.0-inch digital instrument screen, cupholders, and a surround-view camera system. Taller drivers and passengers will have plenty of headroom and legroom in both the front and rear.
Unfortunately, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-class still lacks a power liftgate on the back. To open the side-hinged gate, which has a full-size spare tire mounted on it, you must be in good physical condition. With the back seats up, you can fit 38 cubic feet of goods. They offer about 69 cubic feet of capacity when folded (60/40 split).
Infotainment and features
The 12.0-inch entertainment system with navigation and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is a standard feature of the 2022 Mercedes-AMG G63. Two USB ports and an SD card reader are located up front. The package also includes a three-year membership to Mercedes-linked Benz’s auto services, which offer fundamental features like a remote engine starting and vehicle monitoring. Optional features include Wi-Fi and a back entertainment system with two 10.0-inch touchscreens, each with a separate USB, auxiliary, and HDMI input.
Engine, Power, and Transmission
A twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine with 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque powers all Mercedes-AMG G63 models. With paddle shifters on the steering wheel, a nine-speed automatic transmission transfers all of that power to the all-wheel-drive system. The G63 can easily climb difficult dirt terrain thanks to its three locking differentials and its Low-range gearing (2.93:1 reduction).
The G63 acceleration from 0 to 60 mph is roughly 3.9 seconds and it weighs around 5800 pounds. Along with its additional power, the G63 has suspension tuning tailored specifically for AMG. Although the ride comfort is noticeably better than in prior G-wagons, don’t expect much in the way of handling given this SUV’s towering height and off-road focus.
How much is a Mercedes-Benz G63?
Pricing-wise, the 2023 Mercedes-AMG G63 has seen a $51,003 price increase, bringing its recommended retail price (RRP) from $247,700 four years ago to $365,900 including on-road expenses.
