2025 Volvo XC90: What We Know

Volvo’s largest gas-powered SUV, the XC90, is not going away with the introduction of the totally electric EX90. Although a new generation model is not coming, the present luxury SUV is undergoing another cosmetic update. It incorporates multiple internal and external improvements and is an upgrade to the one released in 2019.

Design

The second-generation Volvo XC90 is maturing beautifully, despite being a decade old already. A new grille design and slightly updated headlights with a reworked LED daytime running light signature are the highlights of the minor facelift. Vertical air vents have also been added to the front bumper, and the lower air intake now protrudes farther than it did previously. Volvo modified the light pattern at the rear while keeping the recognizable design of the taillights.

Interior and Features

Inside the Volvo XC90, more significant modifications are evident, with the removal of the previous 9.0-inch infotainment system. In 2025, a larger 11.2-inch touchscreen takes centre stage. It is no longer tucked in the centre of the dashboard; instead, it resembles a tablet protruding from the dashboard. Aside from having a larger diagonal, the screen appears sharper after increasing pixel density by 21%. If you prefer an even larger display, the EX90 offers a gigantic 14.5-inch infotainment system.

Accessing your favourite functions is now faster and easier with the new arrangement, which features shortcuts to the controls and apps on the home screen. Selecting a Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid will put you in fully electric drive mode with only a touch. Even though the XC90 has been in production since 2014, the infotainment system’s new arrangement essentially mimics that of more contemporary Volvo models.

But there’s still more. Volvo says that to create a quieter interior, additional sound insulation has been added to several areas of the car. The dashboard also features recycled-material ornamental panels and modified air vents in other places. The redesigned interior now offers more functionality with an extra cupholder and increased storage space in the centre console. After being separated from the storage room, the wireless charging pad was moved to behind the centre tunnel so that it is no longer in the way.

Engine and Power

Technical details are still under wraps for Volvo, but we do know that diesel engines are no longer in use. On the WLTP cycle, the plug-in hybrid is expected to go over 43 miles in electric mode and over 497 miles when the petrol tank is taken into account. The EPA rates the departing XC90 plug-in hybrid’s electric range in the US at 32 miles, while its total range is 530 miles. The Swedes are offering the rather new Volvo XC90 in B5 and B6 flavours with a moderate hybrid setup and selling it as a plug-in hybrid T8 as seen below.

There is still an option to raise and lower the SUV by up to 1.57 and 0.8 inches, respectively, using an air suspension. To provide a smooth ride, active chassis tech checks the road and car 500 times every second.

Availability

Order books are open, and production is scheduled to start when customer deliveries commence in the latter part of the year. Gas cars are here to stay, as seen by these recent improvements made to keep the Volvo XC90 innovative and competitive.
